The Spanish writer Javier Marías has died. He was born in Madrid on 20 September 1951 he was also a translator, journalist and essayist. His most recent book was T.omás Nevinsonpublished this year by Einaudi: in the novel the co-star of the previous book returns, Bertha Island. The writer died on Sunday 11 September at the Quirón Clinic in Madrid, probably due to pneumonia for which he had been hospitalized.

Marías had received in career important international awards including the Bottari Lattes Grinzane International Prize, the Rómulo Gallegos Prize, the Prix Femina Etranger; in 2011 she also received the Nonino Prize.

Son of the Spanish philosopher Julián Marías, he spent part of his childhood in the United States, where his father taught. The writer has a degree in English Literature, worked as a translator, collaborating with various publications. Between 1983 and 1985 he taught Spanish Literature and Translation Theory in Great Britain (Oxford University) and in the United States (Wellesley College, Massachusetts).
