A family of four found dead in an apparent murder-suicide in Mosman Park, Western Australia, had recently experienced cuts to their National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funding, raising questions about access to vital support services. The tragedy, which claimed the lives of Jarrod Clune, Maiwenna Goasdoue, and their teenage sons Leon and Otis, has sparked a community-wide discussion about the pressures faced by families caring for individuals with high support needs.
The bodies of the family were discovered at their Mott Close property on Friday morning, February 1, 2026. A carer raised the alarm after finding a note on the front door instructing them not to enter and to contact police.
Desperate Plea for Support
According to a statement provided to 9News Perth by a friend of the family, who requested anonymity, the parents were increasingly desperate for assistance as their NDIS funding was reduced. “The very people the NDIS was created for are the very ones who can’t get the services they so desperately need,” the statement read. The family faced a “constant battle” to secure services for their sons, a struggle described as “exhausting, never-ending and filled with rejection.”
The friend refuted suggestions that the family did not actively seek help, stating, “When the family looked for help, they were always rejected and told their boys were too tough.” The statement continued, expressing profound sadness and acknowledging the immense “strain, isolation and desperation” the family endured.
Investigation Reveals Planning and Joint Decision
Western Australian Police confirmed the existence of two notes found at the scene. While the initial note served as a warning to the arriving carer,a second, more detailed note – described as a “letter” – led investigators to believe the deaths were likely a murder-suicide.
Authorities have indicated the second note revealed a degree of planning, including arrangements for the family’s finances following their deaths. It is alleged the note also provided insight into the family’s mindset, suggesting a joint decision by the parents to end their lives. Police have declined to release specific details from the note. Detective Sergeant Jessica securo confirmed the family had previously accessed care providers, but both Jarrod and Maiwenna were primarily responsible for their sons’ care and were experiencing significant pressure and exhaustion.
Community and Political Response
The tragedy has deeply affected the Mosman Park community. State opposition leader Basil Zempilas, representing the neighboring electorate of Churchlands, expressed the collective sadness felt throughout the area. “There’s a real sense of sadness in the area about what’s taken place,” Zempilas said. He emphasized the importance of providing support to families facing similar challenges, stating, “We would hope that as horrific as this has been, that other families who might be experiencing similar anguish and difficulties can find some answers out of this.”
Zempilas urged individuals struggling with pain or hardship to reach out for help, adding, “And I hope the one positive that might come out of this horrible, terrible tragedy is that the way to connect with those services and that help might become clearer and might become easier for families who might be experiencing these s
