Storm Francis unleashes Widespread Disruption Across Spain with Rain, Snow, and Arctic Blast
Table of Contents
Spain is bracing for a prolonged period of severe whether as Storm francis brings widespread rain, strong storms, and a dramatic temperature drop starting January 2, 2026. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has confirmed that the unstable conditions will persist through at least next week, with the potential for meaningful snowfall even at low elevations.
The initial impact of Storm Francis will be felt in the Canary Islands and Andalusia, with heavy rainfall and thunderstorms expected to intensify throughout the weekend and spread across the central and southern regions of the Iberian Peninsula. According to Aemet, precipitation in Seville coudl reach approximately 20 liters per square meter.
Intensifying Rainfall and Storms
The situation is expected to worsen beginning Sunday, January 4th, as a very cold arctic air mass descends upon the country. This influx of frigid air will cause temperatures to plummet across nearly all of mainland Spain, leading to widespread frost and an increased likelihood of snowfall in mountainous regions. “The combination of low temperatures with the wind can leave very low thermal sensations even in central hours,” a senior official warned.
The instability associated with Storm Francis will gradually shift eastward, impacting communities in Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, the Valencian Community, and the Region of Murcia on Sunday and Monday. While rainfall intensity is projected to decrease south of January 6th, Three Kings’ Day, locally strong showers may persist in the Strait of Gibraltar and melilla.
Snowfall Threat Expands to Lower Elevations
The arrival of the arctic air mass considerably increases the probability of snowfall, not only in the Spanish mountain ranges – including the Pyrenees, eastern Cantabrian mountains, and the upper Ebro region – but also at medium and low levels. Aemet notes that snowfall could extend to areas of eastern Iberia, the Valencian Community, the Beticas, and even the central peninsula.

The probability of snowfall in the central-eastern interior of the peninsula has increased compared to previous forecasts, raising concerns about potential disruptions to transportation routes. Aemet advises residents to stay informed about weather and road conditions.
Temperature Plunge and widespread Frost
Beyond the precipitation, the most significant impact of Storm Francis will be the dramatic temperature decline. Temperatures are expected to drop by up to five degrees Celsius across much of the peninsula, with frost extending across the entire territory, excluding coastal areas, the Guadalquivir basin, and the archipelagos. Moderate temperatures are anticipated in the interior of the northern half of the country.
