Décines-Charpieu, France – A municipal police officer was injured Wednesday afternoon after a collision during a pursuit stemming from a refusal to stop, authorities said. The incident, which occurred on Avenue Jean Jaurès, sent the officer skidding several dozen meters along the roadway, according to witnesses and local officials. The suspect was later apprehended in Vaulx-en-Velin.

The incident began around 3:00 PM when officers from the Décines-Charpieu motorized police brigade attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a motorcyclist. According to reports, the rider immediately fled, initiating a pursuit. A third vehicle then unexpectedly reversed into the path of the fleeing motorcyclist, who managed to avoid a direct collision but caused the police officer to lose control and slide across the asphalt. First Deputy Mayor Jean-Emmanuel Alloin described the scene, stating, “The skid marks seemed to go on forever.”

Suspect Apprehended After Pursuit

Authorities quickly launched a search for the suspect, aided by a crucial detail: a police officer nearly caught the fleeing rider, but in the process, inadvertently ripped off a covering concealing the vehicle’s license plate. This allowed police to identify the suspect and track him to Vaulx-en-Velin, where he was taken into custody by the BAC (Brigade Anti-Criminalité), a specialized unit of the French National Police. The suspect is reportedly an adult with a prior criminal record, described by officials as “very unfavorably known” to law enforcement.

The injured officer was transported to Édouard-Herriot Hospital for treatment. Alloin reassured the public that the officer is “doing well,” and is believed to have sustained either a sprain or a fracture to the ankle. “The story ends well, but it could have had dramatic consequences,” Alloin added, praising the coordinated response of all involved security forces and calling it an “exemplary” display of teamwork.

This incident comes less than a week after another instance of a refusal to comply with a police stop involving motorcyclists in Décines-Charpieu. On February 22nd, officers responded to a similar situation on Rue du Prainet, where two motocross riders refused to stop, leading to their vehicles being impounded, as previously reported by Le Progrès.

Décines-Charpieu Police and Road Safety

The Décines-Charpieu municipal police force utilizes a two-motorcycle unit to address traffic violations, including dangerous behavior like “rodéos” – illegal and reckless motorcycle gatherings – due to their maneuverability and ability to access areas inaccessible to cars, according to the city’s website. The force, comprised of 22 agents, focuses on both administrative policing – maintaining public order and safety – and judicial policing, enforcing laws and assisting judicial authorities.

The city has been shifting its policing strategy towards increased visibility and proximity to residents. In addition to traditional foot patrols, the police utilize ATVs for patrols in public spaces and are exploring the possibility of introducing mounted patrols, particularly around the Groupama Stadium during events, to prevent incivility. The police also operate a city-wide surveillance center with 97 cameras, providing real-time monitoring and supporting criminal investigations.

Recently, the historic police station at the corner of Avenues Jean-Jaurès and Jean-Macé was closed, consolidating operations at the 20 Rue Carnot location in the Charpieu district. This move is part of an effort to centralize resources and improve efficiency.

Authorities have not released further details regarding the charges the suspect will face in connection with Wednesday’s incident. An investigation is ongoing. Updates will be provided as they become available.

This incident underscores the risks faced by law enforcement officers during routine traffic stops and highlights the importance of compliance with police directives. Anyone with information related to this incident is encouraged to contact the Décines-Charpieu police department.
