Tragedy in the Pyrenees: Mountain Climber Dies in Fall, Rescue Teams Respond to Multiple Incidents
A 27-year-old mountain climber from Navarre, Spain, died this weekend after a fall on Pico de las Neveras in Panticosa. the incident, which also resulted in the death of one of her dogs, highlights the inherent risks of mountaineering and has prompted a surge in rescue operations across the Aragonese Pyrenees.
The woman, a resident of Pamplona, was reported missing after failing to return home on Saturday following a hiking trip.A family member alerted authorities, prompting a search initiated by the COS Navarra and swiftly escalating into a full-scale rescue operation.
According to the Guardia Civil, the rescue effort mobilized the Greim de Panticosa, the Air Unit of Huesca, and a medical professional from the 061 emergency service. At 3:10 PM on Sunday, search teams located the climber’s body on a steep slope of pico de las Neveras, at an altitude of 2,890 meters. “The signs were incompatible with life,” a senior official stated. One of the two dogs accompanying the climber was also found deceased at the scene.
Evacuation efforts were hampered by strong winds. The climber’s remains were transported to the helipad in Panticosa and subsequently transferred to the Legal Medicine Institute of huesca for further investigation. The second dog remains missing.

One of the mountaineers sustained a minor knee injury, forcing the group to spend the night exposed to the elements.
the Greim de Benasque maintained contact with the stranded climbers overnight, and with support from the air Unit of Huesca and a 061 medical professional, they were located the following morning exhibiting mild symptoms of hypothermia. they were then transported to benasque and a shelter in Artiga de Lin, Lérida, where their vehicle was parked.
On Saturday, two hikers – a 56-year-old man and a 14-year-old girl, both from Barcelona – were rescued near the Ángel Orús refuge in Eriste due to the man’s muscle fatigue.
Sunday also saw the evacuation of a 62-year-old hiker from Monzón,who suffered a shoulder dislocation after a fall on the GR-11 trail in the Estós valley,Benasque. Additionally, three hikers from Navarre – aged 29, 28, and 46 – were rescued after becoming stranded in the Canal del Pico Pabellón, in the Sierra de la Partacua, Sallent de Gállego.
A separate incident occurred involving a French mountaineer who died after tripping on Pico Gabietos, also in the Aragonese Pyrenees.
