Bhopal : Sanchi, operated by Madhya Pradesh State Cooperative Milk Federation (MPSCDF), is one of India’s most famous milk brands. But Amul milk brand is in talks for a possible takeover of MP’s famous Sanchi Dairy. This is a brand which is familiar and equally liked in every household of Madhya Pradesh.
Let us tell you that Sanchi Federation buys 10 lakh liters of milk from the farmers of MP every day, which is estimated to be almost half of the total milk produced in the state. Amul is already a major competitor in Madhya Pradesh. Amul buys around 4 lakh liters of milk from farmers. According to officials, Amul acquisition of Sanchi will provide better opportunities to the farmers of Madhya Pradesh. Sources told that the BJP-led Madhya Pradesh government wants to adopt Gujarat-based Amul’s model for Sanchi in MP, adding that Amul will ‘help’ Sanchi to expand its base in Madhya Pradesh or acquire it. Its decision will soon be made clear after the Lok Sabha elections.
MP government will soon take a decision Principal Secretary of Animal Husbandry and Dairy Department Gulshan Bamra said that the government will soon take a decision on the role of Amul in Madhya Pradesh for the benefit of milk producing farmers. MP government believes that this will be beneficial for the dairy farmers of the state. Since January this year, several rounds of discussions have taken place between the Animal Husbandry Department and Amul. Officials said Amul wants to take over the Sanchi brand. However, the government is wary of an Amul versus Nandini fight like in Karnataka, which became a hotly contested political issue during the assembly elections around this time last year.
Amul vs Sanchi government does not want
Government does not want Amul vs Sanchi in Madhya Pradesh. Therefore, she is moving cautiously. For this reason this decision has been put on hold until after the elections. On January 10 this year, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav had attended the joint meeting of Sanchi and Amul in Ahmedabad to help ensure procurement of milk from milk producers of MP and protect the interests of dairy farmers.
While Amul’s turnover in 2022-23 was Rs 70,000 crore, Sanchi had an annual sales turnover of Rs 1982 crore that year. Additionally, the Madhya Pradesh government needs to spend Rs 1,500 crore per year for about a decade to meet the technology and market needs. Considering this, perhaps MP government is also planning to join hands with Amul and work together. Government sources said that a decision on this will be taken after the model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections is lifted.
