A wave of demonstrations unfolded in Bhopal on Sunday as members of the Bajrang dal and Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) protested statements made by Maulana mahmood Madani, president of the Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind.The protests centered on allegations that Madani’s remarks were divisive and threatened social harmony.
Concerns Over Judicial Independence
The demonstrations followed a speech delivered by Maulana Madani on Saturday during the National Governing Body meeting in Bhopal. Madani voiced concerns regarding the state of India’s judicial and social landscape, alleging a decline in constitutional rights and increased targeting of minority communities. He specifically questioned the independence of the judiciary, referencing past rulings on sensitive cases such as the babri Masjid dispute and the legality of triple talaq.
“After the verdict on Babri Masjid, triple talaq and several other matters, it seems that courts are functioning under the Government’s pressure for a few years now…We have several instances before that have raised questions on the character of courts… The Supreme Court is eligible too be called supreme only when it follows the Constitution and when it upholds the law. If it doesn’t do that, it doesn’t deserve to be called ‘Supreme’,” Madani stated.
allegations of Systemic Issues and Minority Insecurity
Beyond questioning the judiciary, Madani highlighted a series of issues contributing to a sense of insecurity among Muslims in India. He cited instances of bulldozer actions, mob lynching, and the alleged seizure of Waqf properties as evidence of systemic discrimination. He also criticized the implementation of anti-conversion laws, arguing they infringe upon the essential right to freedom of religion.
Madani further addressed the contentious issue of Vande Mataram, stating that communities who readily comply with demands are “murda kaum†— or “dead communities†— while vibrant communities actively confront challenges. He elaborated, stating that a “murda kaum†would instantly recite Vande Mataram when asked, whereas a “zinda kaum†— a living community — would bolster morale and meet the situation head-on.
protesters Demand Accountability
Protesters at the Bhopal presentation echoed concerns about Madani’s statements, demanding both an apology from the religious leader and action from authorities regarding his remarks. demonstrators gathered at the site, displaying banners and chanting slogans to express their discontent. Leaders of the Bajrang Dal and VHP stated they would continue to pressure authorities to take action against Madani, while also calling for a public apology.Madani has not yet issued a formal response to the protests, but a spokesperson for the Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind indicated he stands by his concerns regarding the state of judicial independence and minority rights. The situation concluded with authorities assuring protesters that Madani’s statements would be reviewed, and a commitment to uphold constitutional principles.
