Indonesian Ulema Council Retains Leadership for Next Five-Year Term

A continuation of established leadership signals stability for the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) as it embarks on its next five-year period, following deliberations at the XI National Conference in Jakarta. The reaffirmation of key figures underscores a commitment to ongoing initiatives and a focus on maintaining religious harmony within the nation.

The announcement came during the reading of the MUI’s accountability report for the 2020-2025 period on Saturday, November 22, 2025.

Leadership Confirmed at National Conference

Prof KH Ma’ruf Amin will continue to serve as Chair of Considerations (Wantim), while KH Anwar Iskandar has been reaffirmed as the General Chair of the MUI for the 2025-2030 term. This continuity was confirmed by a senior MUI official during the XI National Conference, held at the Mercure Ancol Hotel in Jakarta from November 20-23, 2025.

“Until now, if we ask the National Conference participants, it leads to two things, namely that the advisory board is still the same, the general chairman is still the same, namely the General Chairman Kiai Anwar Iskandar and the Chairman of the Kiai Advisory Council Ma’ruf Amin,” the official stated.

Prioritizing Representation and Harmony

The XI National Conference served as a crucial forum for charting the course of the MUI’s activities for the coming years, including the election of its management team for the 2025-2030 period. A key consideration throughout the selection process was ensuring adequate representation from various religious mass organizations.

According to the MUI official, this emphasis on representation is vital for maintaining harmony and ensuring a smooth and inclusive election process. This approach reflects the MUI’s commitment to broad-based consensus and collaborative leadership.

The reaffirmation of current leadership suggests a period of continued focus on the council’s existing priorities and a dedication to fostering unity within Indonesia’s diverse religious landscape.
