Mullaperiyar: Mullaperiyar opened at night, Minister to go to Kerala Supreme Court, vigilance at Idukki Dam

Idukki: Minister Roshy Augustine has said that the shutters on the Mullaperiyar Dam in Mullaperiyar Dam will be opened at night and the Supreme Court will be approached against the massive outflow of water. He said such an opening before reaching 142 feet was not permissible and the Kerala government was taking it seriously. The government will give a serious notice to Tamil Nadu in this regard. The Water Resources Minister said that he was deeply saddened by the incident and would take the matter to the Supreme Court today.

In addition to the oversight committee, the committee will be notified of any such action. The minister also asked how long the security would be maintained at night. He said he would try to take action using the Disaster Prevention Act. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu had reduced the amount of water flowing out of the Mullaperiyar Dam by 10 pm. Tamil Nadu reduced the water level by closing three shutters at 10 pm. The amount of water released after midnight was reduced to 3906 cubic feet per second. Meanwhile, the water level in Mullaperiyar has also dropped. The current water level in Mullaperiyar is 141.75 feet.

Earlier, Tamil Nadu had raised the shutters of the Mullaperiyar at 8.30 pm on Monday due to rising water levels. Nine shutters were raised by an additional 120 cm (1.20m). With this, 12654.09 cusecs of water reached Periyar. The district administration has directed the residents on both sides of the Periyar River to be vigilant in case the shutters are raised. The district collector said people should not panic and all precautions have been taken.

The water level in the Periyar also rose as more water was released than usual. The Kadassikkad atorum, Manjumala atorum, Vikas Nagar and Nallathambi colony were flooded. The Peermede tehsildar said people were being shifted to safer places. Relief camps were set up. But so far no one has been transferred to the camp. In many places, people have begun to move in with relatives.

Meanwhile, locals in Tamil Nadu protested against the Mullaperiyar Dam for opening the shutters at night without warning and releasing large quantities of water. Minister Roshi Augustine, who was visiting the site after the floods inundated houses on the banks of the Periyar, witnessed a massive protest against the massive flooding at night.
