Munich Frontrunner to Host 2027-28 Champions League Final as UEFA Receives 15 Bid Declarations
UEFA has received expressions of interest from 15 member associations to host finals for its premier club competitions in 2028 and 2029, with Munich currently poised to host the 2027-28 Champions League final. The announcement signals a competitive bidding process for some of the most coveted events in European soccer.
The bidding process, which commenced in mid-July and had an initial expression of interest deadline of October 22, encompasses the men’s and women’s editions of the UEFA Champions League (UCL), UEFA Europa League, and UEFA Conference League for both 2027-28 and 2028-29.
Currently,Munich stands alone as the sole bidder for the 2028 UCL final.A senior official stated that the Allianz Arena – which operates under a different name during UEFA competitions – is the clear frontrunner. For the 2029 UCL final, the competition narrows to Wembley Stadium in London and Barcelona’s Camp Nou, which is undergoing renovations.
Beyond the premier Champions League competition, several cities are vying to host the Women’s Champions League finals.Venues in lyon, Bilbao, Basel, and Istanbul have submitted bids for the 2028 edition, while Lyon, Dublin, Basel, and Cardiff are in contention for 2029. Candidate host venues are permitted to express interest in hosting multiple finals across different competitions.
The bidding landscape for the Europa League finals reveals interest from france (with both lyon and Paris as potential hosts),Turin,Bucharest,and Belgrade for 2028. the 2029 edition sees a similar lineup, with the addition of Ankara as a potential host city.
For the UEFA Conference League, at least six cities have declared interest in hosting the 2028 final: Lille, Budapest, Turin, Astana or Almaty in Kazakhstan, and Gdansk in Poland. The 2029 edition attracts even more attention, with Helsinki, Lille, Budapest, Turin, Astana or Almaty, and Gdansk all submitting bids.
UEFA will recieve final proposals, including detailed bid dossiers, by June 10 of next year. The governing body’s executive committee will then appoint the host association partners for each final next September.
