This February 10, the Municipality of Guatemala explained a new project that seeks replace all traffic lights in the metropolitan area with others with better technology and thus reduce vehicular traffic.
In a publication shared on the municipality’s social networks, it is detailed that the objective is change more than 500 traffic lights in the city to improve the mobilization of the more than 650 thousand vehicles that travel daily in the metropolitan area.
This change was achieved, according to authorities, through an agreement with the digital platform Waze called “Waze for Cities”.
“Today our traffic lights They work with fixed times all day. We have a very obsolete traffic light system that does not communicate with each other,” they report in the video.
According to what the municipality said, the objective is implement “smart traffic lights”through a communication protocol that allows remote control.
In addition, the traffic lights would have other technological innovations like sensorized cameras.
“These cameras They will allow us to adapt the traffic light itself to the existing traffic conditions.“, point out the authorities.
With the implementation of this new traffic light system, it is expected not only a reduction in vehicular traffic, but the requirement of Municipal Police agents of Transit to manage vehicle mobility.
The Municipality details that other countries in the world have used this technology, and cases of Cali and Medellín in Colombia, Panama, Dominican Republic, Buenos Aires and El Salvador.
Regarding data, the municipality stressed that with the implementation of the new traffic lights, Traffic congestion would be reduced by 25%, while traffic accidents would drop by 15%.

“Every three months we will have 70 traffic lights new installed. These works They will last approximately 28 months to change the entire network of traffic lights in the city,” says the municipality.
