MUSIQC Platform Sees Surge in Users,Championing French-Language Music

the MUSIQC platform, dedicated to showcasing French-speaking music from Quebec and beyond, has rapidly gained traction, attracting nearly 225,000 users in its first year. This surge in popularity underscores a clear demand for French-language content, according to industry leaders.

A Year of Growth and Finding

the Professional Society of Authors, Composers of quebec and Entrepreneurial Artists (SPACQ-AE) recently released data highlighting MUSIQCS impressive user base. “Nearly 225,000 users in one year… that’s a truly fantastic adoption rate.We didn’t expect that,” stated a senior official at SPACQ-AE.”This is a truly fantastic adoption rate.We didn’t expect that.”

Bridging the Gap in Music Discovery

MUSIQC operates as a curated directory, connecting users to music available on established streaming services like Spotify, YouTube music, Apple Music, Deezer, Qobuz, Amazon Music, and tidal. Rather than competing with these giants, the platform aims to elevate overlooked French-language artists.

As one representative explained,MUSIQC functions “like a store where we put in the window the products which, unlike, would have been found in the back of the shop next to the toilets never seen.” This analogy highlights the platform’s mission to increase the visibility of Quebec and French-language music.

The challenge of Representation

Currently, French-language Quebec music faces significant challenges in gaining prominence on mainstream streaming platforms. Data from the Observatory of Culture and Communications reveals that only approximately 5% of the 10,000 most-listened-to songs in Quebec in 2023 were in French.

This disparity is particularly striking given that roughly 22% of the Canadian population identifies as French-speaking. “There is clearly a problem,” a SPACQ-AE spokesperson emphasized, noting that the issue extends beyond algorithmic limitations to encompass a lack of dedicated promotion.

A Platform for Accessibility and Expansion

MUSIQC offers users easy access to a wide range of French-language content without requiring account creation.Users can select playlists and be seamlessly redirected to their preferred streaming service. The platform now also offers integrated listening, allowing users to remain within MUSIQC while enjoying their chosen music.

The platform’s success, according to SPACQ-AE, is also rooted in a favorable political and cultural climate. “Quebecers,French-speakers,Canadians in general, want to consume local products, products from here,” a senior official noted. “Then, this desire also extends to music.”

International Horizons and Future Growth

While the majority of MUSIQC’s users currently hail from Quebec and Canada, the platform is experiencing growing interest from the United States,France,Germany, and Belgium. SPACQ-AE is actively pursuing international expansion, launching MUSIQC.FR in France last fall.

The institution believes the platform’s business model possesses “very, very, very strong export potential,” with the goal of fostering connections between French-speaking music scenes worldwide.Discussions are underway with potential partners in Belgium and Africa.

Looking ahead,SPACQ-AE aims to diversify its revenue streams and secure long-term financial backing to support MUSIQC’s continued advancement.Currently, the project relies on non-recurring federal and Quebec funding.

The organization also plans to conduct in-depth interviews with artists to assess the platform’s impact on their listenership and visibility. MUSIQC currently features music from indigenous artists, in Creole, and instrumental compositions, further broadening its scope.

“I think we need to stop talking about discoverability. We must act,” a representative stated passionately. “Collective promotion initiatives must be encouraged. There is nothing sadder for an artist than to create music that no one listens to and that it ends up in the bottom of a drawer.”
