Thiruvananthapuram: CPM state secretary MV Govindan has said that no one has said that the Indian Union Muslim League is a communal party. He said this in response to a question when he met reporters after the party’s state secretariat meeting today.

MV Govindan stated that the Muslim League is seen as a party that works in a democratic manner. Muslim League is a party that works democratically for minorities. This is how it is explained in the party documents. We have not said that it is a communal party. Organizations like SDPI take a communal stance. MV Govindan also said that we have strongly criticized the League when it came to the point of joining them.

The CPM has been taking a soft approach to the Muslim League for a long time. MV Govindan was speaking in anticipation of the situation in which the Congress had to come to the position taken by the League during the discussion in the Legislative Assembly, including on the issue of Chancellor. It was at this stage that the question about the Muslim League was raised. Earlier during the EMS period, there was a situation where the Muslim League was strongly opposed. There was also a situation where the state was ruled by the League. This statement is seen as part of an attempt to bring the League to the left front by highlighting the recent differences between the Congress and the League.
