Kenya’s Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua achieved his childhood dream of becoming a pilot after earning a Private Pilot Licence in 2023, logging over 300 flying hours and sharing his journey through a vlog.
Alfred Mutua, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection, has fulfilled a lifelong dream by becoming a licensed pilot, a journey that began in his childhood in Riruta Satellite, Nairobi. The 2023 achievement marks the culmination of decades of dedication, from watching planes as a nine-year-old to earning his Private Pilot Licence (PPL) and now documenting his flights in a public vlog.
From Riruta to the Cockpit
Mutua’s fascination with aviation began when, as a nine-year-old, he would sit outside his family’s wooden shack in Riruta Satellite and watch aircraft pass overhead. One day, something stirred inside my nine-year-old skinny frame, and I wanted to fly one day – not as a passenger but as a pilot,

His passion for flight was further fueled by reading a picture book by Dale Carnegie at the Kenya National Library, which traced aviation history from the Wright brothers to modern jets. The book followed the history of the magic of flight, from the Wright brothers to current jets. I was hooked,
he recalled Nairobi Leo. Even after moving to the U.S. on a scholarship, Mutua remained close to aviation, working at Spokane Airport in Washington while studying communication.
A Dream Put on Hold
Despite his early enthusiasm, life’s responsibilities delayed his pilot aspirations. Many years later, life happened: family, children, career, no time, not enough money,
he admitted The Kenyan Times. It wasn’t until 2023 that Mutua decided to act on his dream. I woke up one morning and decided to transform my dream into a reality,

Enrolling at 99s Flying School in Nairobi, Mutua committed to rigorous training, studying late into the night and spending weekends and evenings in the air. Six months after starting, he completed his first solo flight in Malindi. Seven months into his training, he passed his PPL exam, a milestone he described as the realisation of a childhood ambition

Beyond the Licence: Building Hours and a Legacy
Mutua’s journey didn’t end with the licence. He has since accumulated over 300 flying hours, training at 99s Flying School and the Kenya Aeronautical College. He has flown aircraft in Kenya and South Africa, often using weekends to explore new routes. Today, with over 300 hours, I fly whenever I can to different locations – which is basically every weekend,

His goal is to inspire others. I have been recording my flying adventures and now want to share them with all, and especially you, so that every dreaming boy or girl is encouraged – to know that with God, determination and planning, everything is possible,
