Khabarovsk Celebrates Bountiful Harvests and Thriving Dacha Culture

A vibrant Regional Gardener’s day exhibition showcased the remarkable agricultural achievements of Khabarovsk Krai’s summer residents, highlighting both traditional crops and innovative experimentation.

Khabarovsk recently celebrated its 24th annual Regional Gardener’s Day, a testament to the enduring spirit of local agriculture and the dedication of its gardeners. The event, held on the last Sunday of October at the Arsenalets sports complex, featured a dazzling exhibition of produce, preserves, and floral displays from gardening clubs across the region, demonstrating a remarkable commitment to both time-honored traditions and bold new horticultural endeavors.

A Showcase of Regional Abundance

Prior to the official ceremonies, representatives from non-profit gardening partnerships transformed the Arsenalets complex into a vibrant marketplace of homegrown delights. Clubs like “Garden and Vegetable Garden,” “Viola,” “Solnyshko,” and “Lukoshko” presented an astonishing array of goods, from perfectly ripened tomatoes and peppers to an extraordinary selection of jams, compotes, and frozen berries.”Our association tried once again to please the guests of the holiday,” explained Galina Sinitsina, head of the Garden and Vegetable Garden club. The displays weren’t limited to edibles; vibrant bouquets and potted flowers added a touch of beauty to the already impressive scene.

Exotic fruits and Unexpected Delights

Among the most talked-about exhibits was Galina Kozlova’s display of peaches grown in her dacha. “Growing peaches in our climate is a challenge, but it’s also a period of growing up and some kind of blossoming.” The club plans to expand its activities with new master classes, sharing its expertise with the wider Khabarovsk community.

Resourcefulness in Small Spaces

Even clubs with limited exhibition space, like “Solnyshko” and “Lukoshko,” managed to impress. Nadezhda Khozhenets, chairman of the “Sun” club, even removed a especially large head of garlic to make room for othre produce. The Lukoshko club offered a unique treat: pancakes with Nutella made from locally grown black currants and chocolate.”I decided to make such a delicacy to please everyone,” said Galina Rusetskaya, the club’s head.

Resilience and the Future of Gardening

The event also highlighted the challenges faced by some gardening communities. Ekaterina Tertyshnikova, representing SNT “Arsenalets,” noted the difficulties her community has faced following the 2013 floods, which reduced the number of operating sites to just ten. despite these setbacks, she expressed hope for future participation in the exhibition.Alexander Petrov from SNT “Cosmos” echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of continued support for the dacha movement.

A Legacy of Agricultural Innovation

The Regional Gardener’s Day is rooted in the legacy of Grigory Tikhonovich Kazmin, an honorary citizen of Khabarovsk and a renowned scientist who dedicated his life to developing fruit crops in the region. Today, approximately 300,000 residents continue his work, cultivating a diverse range of produce, including vegetables, potatoes, melons, and even peaches – a testament to the region’s evolving agricultural capabilities.

The festive ceremony was opened by Mayor sergei Kravchuk, who himself is an avid gardener.”This is our common holiday,” he stated, acknowledging the meaningful contribution of gardeners to the city’s vibrancy. He also announced that the city budget includes a dedicated subsidy for the construction and repair of utilities for gardeners, with potential for increased funding in the future. Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Andrey Romanchenko added that 23 SNTs received a total of 4.5 million rubles in financial support this year.

The event culminated in the presentation of awards to the winners of the regional gardening competition, a fitting tribute to the dedication and ingenuity of Khabarovsk’s thriving gardening community.
