Bangkok ∙ Myanmar’s military regime has executed 4 political prisoners. This is the first time in 34 years that the death penalty has been carried out in the country. 4 people, including 2 loyal leaders of Aung San Suu Kyi, who was ousted by the military, were charged with terrorism and executed. The action was taken despite the opposition of the United Nations and human rights organizations.
In February 2021, the army overthrew the democratic government and seized power. Phyo Seea Twa (41), an MP from Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy, was arrested last November. Democratic leader Kwo Min Yu, 53, known as Ko Jimmy, was arrested in Yangon last October.
