Bangkok: Myanmar’s former president Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to an additional 3 years in prison for election fraud.
Aung San Suu Kyi has been fighting against the military rule of the Southeast Asian country of Myanmar for many years. In the last general election held in 2020, the coalition led by him won the government with a large majority.
The country’s military refused to accept this and seized power in February last year, disbanding the government alleging fraud in the election. After that, Aung San Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest. Aung San Suu Kyi was charged with inciting a rebellion against the military, violating the Corona rules, corruption cases, election fraud, etc.
The Myanmar court that heard the cases sentenced Aung San Suu Kyi to 4 years in prison last December. After hearing various cases, the court increased the prison sentence up to 17 years.
The court heard the case of alleged election fraud and sentenced him to 3 years imprisonment. Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been under house arrest until now, is said to be likely to be jailed by the verdict.
