Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal commented that the 231 local government elections including Mymensingh and Comilla City Corporation were peaceful except for some untoward incidents.

He made this comment to reporters in an immediate reaction after taking the vote on Saturday (March 9) afternoon.

He said, 231 votes were cast. Most are by-elections. Mymensingh plenum, Comilla City mayoral by-elections. The election started at 8 am and ended peacefully. Two or four unpleasant incidents occurred in some places. 53 persons have been arrested in 18 untoward incidents.

CEC said two significant incidents have occurred in Comilla. We have devolved the responsibility of election commissioners to manage the elections.

The Chief Election Commissioner also said that in our view the election was free, fair and peaceful. We have not yet received any allegations of influence, interference. The firing took place outside the center. However, the vote inside the center was not affected.

Election Commissioner Md. Anichur Rahman said that every candidate has applied more or less force. There have been incidents of obstruction in going to polling stations. Those who did this have been arrested. We said, whoever is found should be arrested. Later, law and order forces took control of the situation. I did not get any complaints later. In Comilla till 3 pm about 35 percent voting.

Election Commissioner Md. Alamgir said that 49 percent voting was done in Mymensingh till 3:30 pm. Even after four in the afternoon, polling took place in a center there.

He said, we wanted peaceful and fair polls. This is in the context of Bangladesh which happened outside the polling station. Overall we can say the vote was peaceful.

60 percent in Barguna Amlati, more than 50 percent of votes in Patuakhali said election commissioner Md. Ahsan Habib Khan. He said that the election was held here peacefully. Expected beautiful, free, fair elections. Nothing stopped anywhere.
