Biologists from Johns Hopkins University told which categories of people are most prone to mosquito bites. aif.ru.
Biologists observed the malarial mosquito Anopheles gambiae in Zambia. They set up a covered mesh arena with air ducts leading to it from tents placed outside. Volunteers slept in these tents.
The smell of bodies and exhaled substances fell on the pads located in the arena, heated to plus 35 and imitating human skin. 200 mosquitoes were released into the arena.
Insects preferred the smell of carboxylic acids contained in some cheeses, and the smells of sage and eucalyptus scared them away. Thus, the choice of mosquitoes depended, among other things, on the diet of people.
The information obtained will improve the traps and repellents, suggest biologists.
