Nancy Guthrie Search: Ransom Notes & Day 4 Update

Investigation Intensifies in Abduction of Savannah Guthrie’s Mother, Ransom Demands Surface

Authorities in Arizona are urgently investigating the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC’s Today show host Savannah Guthrie, and are treating potential ransom notes demanding millions in Bitcoin as credible evidence.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed they are investigating the abduction of Nancy Guthrie from her Tucson, Arizona home, with the case rapidly evolving as law enforcement agencies work to secure her safe return. At least three media outlets – TMZ, and CNN affiliates KOLD and KGUN – reported receiving the alleged ransom notes.

Ransom Notes and Law Enforcement Response

Sheriff Chris Nanos stated that the notes, which reportedly contain specific details about the interior of Guthrie’s residence, are being analyzed with the utmost seriousness. “When the note comes to us, it’s like any piece of evidence. You give it to us. You give us a lead. We’re going to look at every aspect of that lead and work it as a lead,” Nanos explained. He also noted that TMZ alerted authorities after receiving the note, a detail that is part of the ongoing investigation.

While the legitimacy of the notes remains unconfirmed, authorities are not dismissing the possibility of a targeted kidnapping. The notes have been shared with Savannah Guthrie, according to officials.

Details of the Disappearance and Search Efforts

Investigators believe Nancy Guthrie was taken against her will from her Tucson home. Nanos emphasized that Guthrie has limited mobility and that her disappearance is not related to dementia. “This is not dementia-related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” he said, adding that she requires daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2026, and was reported missing around noon on Sunday, February 2, 2026, after a family member received a call from someone at church noting her absence.

An initial search involving canine units, drones, and support from border patrol agents and the homicide unit has been scaled back, though authorities continue to pursue all available leads. Nanos acknowledged that the involvement of the homicide unit is unusual in missing person cases, but justified it by stating, “This one stood out because of what was described to us at the scene and what we located just looking at the scene.” He further clarified, “We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene.”

Evidence and Ongoing Investigation

A small amount of blood was discovered inside Guthrie’s home, and testing is underway to determine its origin. Law enforcement officials are also attempting to recover security footage, which Nanos indicated was likely auto-deleted, requiring forensic retrieval methods.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department posted a missing person alert on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, and confirmed they are working closely with the FBI.

In a recent interview with NBC’s Liz Kreutz, Nanos stated, “We have nothing else to go on but the belief that she is here.” He reiterated the department’s primary goal: “We want to save her.”

Savannah Guthrie released a statement on Monday, February 3, 2026, expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support. “On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

The investigation remains active and ongoing, with authorities pursuing all available leads in the hopes of securing Nancy Guthrie’s safe return.
