Nanoplastics & Gut Health: What You Eat Matters

Our guts are constantly exposed to tiny plastic particles—so small they’re called nanoplastics—and a new study in mice suggests this exposure isn’t harmless. Researchers found that even low doses of these particles, found in everything from drinking water to plastic-packaged foods, can disrupt both gut and liver function, and the impact depends heavily on what else you’re eating.

The study, published in Environmental Science: Nano, is notable because the team created their own polystyrene nanoplastics without the chemical additives often found in commercially available particles. This allowed them to isolate the effects of the plastic itself. Mice were fed nanoplastics—0.1, 1, or 10 mg per kg of body mass daily—in their drinking water for 90 days, alongside either a standard diet or a “Western-style” diet high in fat and sugar.

Diet Plays a Key Role

The research revealed a strong link between nanoplastic exposure and diet. Alterations to gut barrier integrity were more pronounced in mice on the Western-style diet, while changes in gut microbiota composition were amplified in those consuming the standard diet.

In the liver, nanoplastics disrupted fat metabolism regardless of diet, but glucose intolerance—a precursor to diabetes—was significantly worse in mice eating the high-fat, high-sugar diet. Interestingly, the nanoplastics didn’t appear to cross the gut barrier to cause these effects. The changes observed were also associated with increased weight gain in the mice.

These findings demonstrate that even low levels of nanoplastics, free of additional chemicals, can alter gut and liver function in a way that’s heavily influenced by dietary habits.
