NASA Activates Planetary Defence Protocols for Unexplained Comet 3I/ATLAS

NASA has initiated its planetary defense protocol for comet 3I/ATLAS, a celestial object exhibiting “inexplicable” behavior as it journeys through our solar system. The activation, confirmed via a technical notice issued October 21st at 21:08 UT (23:08 CEST) through Harvard’s Minor Planet Center, marks the first time this system has been employed for a visitor originating outside our solar system.

The agency’s response has been notably understated, communicated through an electronic circular announcing an “IAWN Comet Astrometry Campaign” scheduled from November 27, 2025, to January 27, 2026, focused specifically on 3I/ATLAS (C/2025 N1). This campaign, coordinated by the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN), is typically reserved for credible threats to Earth, triggering a global effort to refine space rock detection capabilities and prepare for potential impacts.

A Comet Unlike Any Other

The last official photograph of 3I/ATLAS dates back to August 27, 2025, adding to the growing mystery surrounding the object. Officials with the IAWN acknowledged on Tuesday that predicting the comet’s trajectory presents “unique challenges.” The comet displays an unusual “antitail”-a stream of particles directed toward the Sun,rather than away from it,a phenomenon rarely observed.

This atypical behavior has fueled speculation online, particularly on platforms like X, where users are questioning the lack of official dialog from NASA. Comments such as “Why the silence? What does NASA no that we don’t?” are gaining traction, with some suggesting the situation represents a genuine, undisclosed threat.

from Speculation to Extraterrestrial Theories

The uncertainty has also spawned more outlandish theories. some online accounts, like @misty_vibe, claim “3I/ATLAS is definitely not a comet and NASA is terrified,” even positing it coudl be a “spaceship” carrying “DRAGO reptilians.” These claims are often accompanied by AI-generated fake images circulating on X.

However,the speculation isn’t limited to fringe theories. Harvard professor Avi Loeb has proposed a more scientifically grounded, yet still extraordinary, hypothesis. He suggests the comet’s behavior could indicate a spacecraft utilizing the Oberth effect – a principle in space travel where maneuvers are most efficient when performed near a large gravitational body – to alter its speed and course. 3I/ATLAS is expected to reach its optimal position for an Oberth maneuver within a week, when it will be approximately 126 million miles from the Sun.

Loeb previously theorized that 3I/ATLAS might be a nuclear-powered spacecraft after Hubble Space Telescope images suggested the object was emitting its own light. Further fueling these ideas, images from space probes during their closest approach to Mars on October 3rd appeared to depict a large, cylindrical object coated in nickel, resulting in a green glow. This nickel coating is similar to that used on human spacecraft to withstand extreme heat. “If 3I/ATLAS is a huge mothership, it is likely that it will continue along its original gravitational path and eventually exit the solar system,” Loeb shared in a recent blog post.

Astronomers estimate the object could be gigantic, with a diameter exceeding 28 miles, irrespective of whether it’s a comet or a vessel of extraterrestrial origin.

NASA’s Response and the government Shutdown

NASA has maintained a limited public response, citing the ongoing government shutdown as the reason for a “currently closed” space program. However, the agency qualified the IAWN campaign announcement as a routine exercise to facilitate better photographs of the object from stargazers worldwide.

The situation remains fluid, and the coming weeks of observation during the astrometry campaign will be critical in determining the true nature of 3I/ATLAS and whether it poses any risk to Earth.
