The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft of the NASA has taken pictures of a new crater on the surface of To the moon caused by the impact of the Russian mission ‘Luna 25’.

During its descent, the Russian ship experienced an abnormal one that caused it to impact the surface of the Moon on August 19.

Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, published an estimate of the point of impact on August 21. As reported by NASA, the LROC team (short for LRO Camera) and the LRO Mission Operations team designed and commanded the LRO spacecraft during August 22. to capture images of the site.

The sequence began on August 24 at 18:15 UTC and was completed approximately four hours later at 22:12 UTC. The LROC team compared images taken before the moment of impact and the sequence taken after and found a small new crater.

The most recent image of the area taken by LRO was captured in June 2022; therefore, the crater formed some time after that date. Since this new crater is close to the estimated impact point of Luna 25, the LRO team concludes that it is likely that it came from that missionrather than a natural impactor.

The new crater has some 10 meters in diameter and is located at 57.865 degrees south latitude and 61.360 degrees east longitude at an elevation of about -360 meters. The point of impact occurred on the steep inner edge (more than 20 degrees) of the Pontcoulant G crater, about 400 kilometers from Luna 25’s intended landing site at 69.545 degrees south, 43.544 degrees east.
