The number of human beings who have traveled to the moon and returned safely to Earth is set to grow to 28 this Friday night. In a moment of high-stakes precision, the Artemis II crew to end record-setting mission with Pacific Ocean splashdown will see the Orion capsule glide beneath three massive parachutes for a landing off the coast of San Diego.
Scheduled for 5:07 p.m. PT, the descent marks the conclusion of a 10-day lunar odyssey. This mission represents a historic pivot for human spaceflight, as three Americans and one Canadian became the first people to venture beyond lower Earth orbit since the final Apollo mission in December 1972. For the first time in over five decades, humanity has once again navigated the void of cislunar space—the expanse between our planet and its nearest celestial neighbor.
The mission serves as a critical proof of concept for NASA’s Artemis program, demonstrating that the agency and its international partners can safely transport a crew to the far side of the moon and back. While the mission was a test of systems, it also shattered long-standing barriers of representation in deep-space exploration.
Among the crew, astronaut Christina Koch became the first woman to travel to the moon and back. The crew’s journey of 695,000 miles was not without its technical hiccups, most notably a glitchy onboard toilet that malfunctioned several times. The failure required the crew to use temporary urine collection bags and saw Christina Koch step into an impromptu role as the mission’s plumber to perform inflight repairs.
These challenges were balanced by moments of levity and deep emotion. On Easter Sunday, the crew held a makeshift egg hunt, searching for packets of dehydrated scrambled eggs hidden throughout the spacecraft. They were also accompanied by “Rise,” a plushie mascot designed by eight-year-old Lucas Ye, a second-grader from California, who became a frequent fixture during crew press conferences.
The most poignant moment occurred on Monday, when the crew proposed dedicating a previously unnamed lunar crater to Carroll Taylor Wiseman, the late wife of Commander Reid Wiseman and mother of their daughters, Katey and Ellie. “I just had an overwhelming sense of being moved by looking at the moon,” Koch said. “It lasted just a second or two and I actually couldn’t even make it happen again, but something just threw me in suddenly to the lunar landscape and it became real. The moon really is its own unique body in the universe. When we have that perspective and we compare it to our home of the Earth, it just reminds us how much we have in common.”
The Physics of Re-entry and Recovery
The final phase of the mission is perhaps the most dangerous. Re-entering Earth’s atmosphere at 25,000 mph, the Orion capsule must withstand temperatures reaching up to 5,000°F (2,760°C). To ensure safety, NASA implemented changes to the heat shield following anomalies observed during the uncrewed Artemis I mission in November 2022. Mission managers also opted for a steeper, more direct re-entry path to minimize the duration of heat stress on the craft.
The deceleration process is a choreographed sequence of deployments involving 11 different parachutes. These chutes are designed to progressively slow the capsule from 325 mph to 130 mph, before the three main canopies—stretching a combined 80 yards—deploy to bring the craft down to a final splashdown speed of 17 mph.

Recovery is a massive logistical operation. U.S. Coast Guard and NASA recovery teams have established a landing zone approximately 550 miles in diameter. Once the capsule is secured and the hatch is opened, the crew will undergo immediate medical checks before a brief stop at a San Diego military base.
