William byron Dominates Xfinity 500, Secures Championship Berth Alongside Briscoe, Hamlin, and Larson
Martinsville, VA – William Byron delivered a commanding performance at Martinsville Speedway on Saturday, winning the Xfinity 500 and securing his place in the NASCAR Cup Series Championship race. Joining him in the championship showdown at Phoenix Raceway will be Chase Briscoe, Denny Hamlin, and points leader Kyle Larson.
The Xfinity 500, the second-to-last race of the season, marked the conclusion of the Round of 8 in the playoffs. Only four drivers could advance, and Byron’s victory ensured his spot alongside Hamlin and Briscoe, who had previously clinched their championship eligibility with wins in the preceding weeks.
The 500-lap race on the half-mile track proved to be a grueling test of endurance and skill, characterized by intense braking, aggressive bumping, and rising tempers among the competitors. Byron, starting on the preferred inside line alongside Ty Gibbs, quickly established himself as the driver to beat, leading from the first lap.
“He was the dominant car thus far in the race,” a senior official stated, as Byron controlled the first 125 laps, leaving playoff contenders Joey logano, Kyle Larson, and Chase Elliott in his wake. A caution on lap 29, triggered by Suarez, initiated the first pit stop of the day.
Ryan Blaney, facing a must-win scenario, started the race from 31st position but demonstrated notable early speed, climbing to seventh by the end of the first stage. Though, Byron continued to showcase his dominance, sweeping both Stage 1 and Stage 2.
The race saw multiple cautions, including spins from Carson Hocevar on lap 216 and Cole Custer on lap 230. Following a pit cycle after Stage 2, Blaney inherited the front row, setting the stage for a thrilling final stage battle with Byron.
As the race neared its conclusion, Blaney briefly took the lead after a restart, but tire wear became a notable factor. Byron capitalized on Blaney’s struggles, retaking the lead on lap 458 after contact while entering a corner. A late-race caution on lap 483 further intensified the drama.
With just 10 laps remaining, Byron maintained his lead on the final restart, expertly defending against Blaney’s attempts to challenge for the win. As the checkered flag waved, Byron completed the 500 laps, claiming victory in the 2025 Xfinity 500.
The championship field is now set: Byron, Briscoe, Hamlin, and Larson will compete for the ultimate prize at Phoenix Raceway. Regrettably, Joey Logano, Ryan Blaney, Christopher Bell, and Chase Elliott were eliminated from playoff contention.
Byron’s performance was particularly impressive, as he led an exceptional 304 of the 500 laps. The regular season champion proved his consistency and skill on one of NASCAR’s most challenging tracks.
