Dr. Monica Beltran’s Sacrifice: ‘Gray’s Anatomy’ Continues Its Tradition of Heartbreaking Loss
The long-running medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy” once again shocked viewers with a devastating character death in its season 22 premiere, adding Dr.Monica Beltran to the show’s growing list of fallen doctors.
“Grey’s Anatomy” has become synonymous with dramatic plot twists, and particularly, the unexpected deaths of beloved characters. Over its two-decade run, the series, created by Shonda Rhimes and her successors, has earned a reputation for heartbreaking farewells – so much so that the hospital setting was once nicknamed “Seattle Grace Mercy Death” before being renamed in honor of former characters Lexie Grey and Mark Sloan. the season 22 premiere continued this tradition, claiming the life of Dr. Monica Beltran, portrayed by Natalie Morales, in the aftermath of a massive explosion.
The explosion, which decimated much of the OR floor, left Dr. Beltran fatally injured when a heavy operating light fell on her pelvis, causing internal bleeding. Despite her own dire situation, Dr. Beltran’s final moments were dedicated to guiding her protégé, Dr. Jules Millin, through a critical pediatric surgery. “I wanted to see someone die selflessly saving someone else’s life, and she was not only saving that little kid on the table – she was guiding Jules through the surgery,” Morales explained in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “she was thinking about the next generation of doctors, and that’s what she would do.She was always thinking about other people.” Morales revealed she spent a lot of time thinking about what Dr. Beltran would be thinking and feeling in those moments, constantly asking herself during the process.
The medical team behind the show also played a crucial role in ensuring the realism of Dr. beltran’s death. Morales consulted with medical consultants Michael Metzner and Linda Klein to understand the physiological effects of her injuries and how they would manifest. She explained that Dr.Beltran realized the severity of her condition after attempting to move and exacerbating her internal bleeding, but prioritized guiding Dr. Millin through the surgery, hoping for a rescue that ultimately didn’t come.
Morales emphasized the importance of portraying Dr.Beltran’s concern for her colleagues in her final moments.”The meaningful thing, for me, was in those last moments for her to acknowledge the other people she loves in that hospital,” she said. “The fact that she doesn’t know what happened outside those doors, and that she hopes the people she loves…she hopes they’re all OK.”
The death is expected to have a significant impact on the remaining characters, particularly Dr. Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) and Dr. Jules Millin (Adelaide Kane). Morales playfully expressed her hope that their grief would be profound and long-lasting,even suggesting the possibility of her character returning as a ghost.
Though, the storyline is also likely to reignite discussions surrounding the “bury yoru gays” trope, given the unfulfilled potential for a romantic relationship between Dr. Beltran and Dr. Shepherd. Addressing this, Morales acknowledged the disappointment of fans who had hoped for a romance, stating, “I’m sorry,” and clarifying that she was not responsible for the creative decisions. She also pointed out that both characters were at points in their lives where a serious relationship might not have been feasible, and that their professional connection and shared dedication to saving lives were equally meaningful. “They saved people’s lives – and is there anything better than saving people’s lives together?” she posited.
Despite only recurring on the show for two and a half seasons,Morales expressed fondness for her time playing Dr. Beltran. “I will miss getting to look like I know what I’m doing,” she joked, adding that she would miss the camaraderie of the cast and crew. She jokingly requested that ABC and Shondaland provide her with a commemorative stethoscope, perhaps even a plaque declaring her membership in a “dead Grey’s Anatomy doctor club.”
“Grey’s anatomy” airs Thursdays at 10/9c on ABC, with episodes streaming the next day on Hulu. Fans can read the full interview with showrunner Meg Marinis at The Hollywood Reporter.
