NATO Chief Highlights Iceland’s Strategic Importance & Ukraine Support During Reykjavik Visit

Iceland’s crucial role in transatlantic security and its steadfast support for Ukraine were central themes during a visit by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Thursday, November 27, 2025. The visit, the first to Iceland since Rutte assumed office in October of the previous year, underscored the alliance’s commitment to bolstering security in the North Atlantic and coordinating aid to Kyiv.

Strengthening Ties in a Volatile World

Rutte met with Icelandic Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir and Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir to discuss regional security challenges and Iceland’s contributions to the alliance. A key component of the visit involved a firsthand look at Iceland’s unique defense landscape, including a tour of Keflavík Air Base and an aerial assessment of the Grindavík lava barriers.

These barriers, constructed to protect the town and vital infrastructure from ongoing volcanic activity, drew praise from the Secretary General. “Volcanic eruptions have forced the people of Grindavík to leave their homes again and again. The lava barriers built to protect the town and critical infrastructure are impressive,” he stated. He further emphasized that Iceland’s response demonstrated the importance of “commitment, ingenuity and resilience.”

Iceland’s Strategic Value to NATO

Rutte was keen to acknowledge Iceland’s growing importance within the alliance, particularly in light of its recently formalized defense policy, presented to parliament earlier in November. He highlighted Iceland’s strategic location, stating, “Your strategic position underpins security for North America and Europe – at sea, below the surface, and in the air above.”

Iceland’s contributions extend to critical areas of NATO’s defense capabilities. According to the Secretary General, the nation operates essential air defence and surveillance systems as part of NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence network. Furthermore, Iceland provides crucial facilities, infrastructure, and host nation support at Keflavík for regular Air Policing operations.

Unwavering Support for Ukraine

The Secretary General also used the visit to commend Iceland’s ongoing assistance to Ukraine. Iceland has pledged over 8 million euros to the Prioritized Ukraine Requirement List (PURL), demonstrating a tangible commitment to bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities.

Beyond financial aid, Iceland is actively supporting initiatives like the Danish defence industry model and the Czech Ammunition Initiative. The nation has also provided funding for prosthetics for wounded Ukrainian soldiers and is collaborating with Lithuania on demining efforts. “These are concrete contributions that save lives and strengthen Ukraine’s defence and also send a clear signal to Moscow that Allies stand with Ukraine,” Rutte affirmed.

The visit served as a powerful reminder of Iceland’s integral role in safeguarding transatlantic security and its unwavering dedication to supporting Ukraine in the face of ongoing aggression.
