One of the most fundamental disagreements in NATO is the discrepancy in the views of the alliance member countries on threats, including terrorism and Russian actions, Day.Az reports, citing The Wall Street Journal (WSJ). According to the publication, NATO planners believe that a “direct Russian invasion” of a bordering member state of the alliance is unlikely in the near future, but the alliance has again begun to prepare for war with the coalition.

Moreover, until recently, some military officials in NATO countries said that “Moscow may be strong enough to carry out an attack in a few years,” the publication notes. In the short term, NATO fears that Russia “could provoke conflict in neighboring countries by encouraging local Russians to do so and using tensions as a pretext to intervene, as the Kremlin did in eastern Ukraine a decade ago,” the WSJ writes.

Now preparation for a “war with the entire coalition” is again a NATO priority, so the alliance aims to “prepare the allies to fight shoulder to shoulder,” the newspaper clarifies. To this end, NATO this year decided to conduct its largest exercise since 1988, called Steadfast Defender. They take place from February to May in Europe, and 90 thousand military personnel from the alliance countries take part in them. Secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev argued that at these exercises “the scenario of an armed confrontation with Russia is being worked out.”
