The poker scheme, allegedly cheating victims out of at least $7 million, lured unsuspecting gamblers into rigged games featuring former professional basketball players like Billups and Jones. According to court documents, the games employed sophisticated cheating technology, including altered card-shuffling machines, hidden cameras in poker chip trays, specialized sunglasses, and even X-ray equipment built into tables to reveal opponents’ cards.
Once targeted “fish” lost, the mafia allegedly used extortion and violence to ensure payment of gambling debts. The scheme reportedly leveraged existing illegal poker operations run by New York crime families – the Gambino, Genovese, and Bonanno families – who received a portion of the proceeds. Members of these families also allegedly engaged in violent acts, including assault, extortion, and robbery, to maintain control and ensure debt repayment.Prosecutors have requested the detention of Mafia members and ringleaders, while seeking “considerable bail conditions” for Billups and Jones, including gambling prohibitions and travel restrictions.
NBA Prop Bets Rigged Through Inside Data
The second scheme centered on manipulating NBA prop bets – wagers based on player statistics like points, rebounds, and assists. In one instance, authorities allege that Rozier, while playing for the Charlotte Hornets in 2023, informed associates of his intention to leave a game early due to a fabricated injury. This allowed gamblers to place bets that yielded tens of thousands of dollars in winnings. Following the game, a co-conspirator allegedly drove to Rozier’s Charlotte home to count the cash proceeds.
The incident in question – a Hornets versus New Orleans Pelicans game on March 23, 2023 – already raised suspicions among bettors at the time. Rozier played just over nine minutes before leaving the game with a reported foot injury and did not return for the remainder of the season. Social media posts from that evening indicated widespread frustration among bettors who believed something “shady” had occurred regarding prop bets on rozier’s statistics.
The indictment against rozier identifies nine unnamed co-conspirators, including current and former NBA players and coaches. The NBA has placed both Billups and Rozier on leave while cooperating fully with authorities. “We take these allegations with the utmost seriousness, and the integrity of our game remains our top priority,” the league stated.
Legal Defense and Ongoing Investigation
Terry Rozier’s lawyer, Jim Trusty, asserted his client is “not a gambler” and “looks forward to winning this fight.” Trusty also noted that the FBI had previously indicated Rozier was not a target in the probe,but agents attempted to arrest him at a hotel early Thursday. “It is unfortunate that instead of allowing him to self-surrender they opted for a photo op,” Trusty stated.”They wanted the misplaced glory of embarrassing a professional athlete with a perp walk.
