The FBI investigation, wich came to light recently, centers around allegations of illegal sports betting and rigged poker games allegedly backed by the Mafia. Rozier, 31, was arrested on Wednesday evening in Orlando, Florida, following a game between the Heat and the Orlando Magic. The arrest stemmed from suspicious betting activity detected by sportsbooks in multiple states prior to a March 23,2023,contest between the Charlotte Hornets and the New Orleans Pelicans.
According to the FBI, Rozier allegedly informed associates that he would leave the game early, triggering a surge in bets on the “under” for his performance statistics – specifically, his scoring, rebounding, and assists. Despite sportsbooks halting betting on Rozier’s props, over $200,000 was reportedly wagered, generating substantial profits for those involved.
Rozier ultimately exited the game after just 10 minutes, citing “right foot pain,” and finished with a modest stat line of 5 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 foul. Reports suggest that money was exchanged between Rozier and other individuals following the game. However, Rozier’s attorney has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, asserting that the guard sought medical attention after the contest.
League Response and Concerns Over Player Performance Betting
The NBA initially investigated “unusual betting activity” related to Rozier’s performance but concluded there was insufficient evidence to warrant disciplinary action. Despite this, Rozier has been placed on administrative leave.
“It certainly doesn’t look good, but now he’s been placed on administrative leave, and there’s a balance here between protecting people’s rights and investigating,” a senior official stated.

The NBA is considering “strengthening” training and education for players and staff, as well as developing methods to identify “betting activity.” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver acknowledged the challenges of investigating such matters, noting that law enforcement possesses powers the league does not. “So the federal government can threaten to put people in jail and do all kinds of things that the league office can’t do,” Silver told Amazon Prime.
