NBA YoungBoy’s ‘MASA’ Album Sparks Controversy with Pro-Trump Lyrics and Imagery

On Friday, July 25, NBA YoungBoy released his highly anticipated album, MASA, his first project following his release from federal custody earlier this year after serving time on firearms charges. While boasting 30 tracks and collaborations with artists like Playboi Carti and Mellow Rackz, the album has quickly become a focal point of discussion due to the rapper’s surprising expressions of support for former President Donald Trump, particularly on the track “XXX.”

The song “XXX” features a repetitive chorus centered around the phrase “sex and violence,” delivered in an emo rock style. However, it’s the accompanying music video and lyrical content that have ignited debate. The visual prominently displays scantily-clad women wielding high-powered rifles, alongside graffiti reading “All Hail Trump” spray-painted in green.

Further solidifying his newfound allegiance, YoungBoy raps, “Make America Slimy Again/Whatever Trump doin’, b***h, it’s good for the youngins.” This marks a significant shift from his previous stance, having publicly criticized Trump in his 2017 song “Red Rum.”

The change in sentiment appears directly linked to a presidential pardon granted to YoungBoy in May. Following the pardon, the artist took to Instagram to express his gratitude. “I want to thank President Trump for granting me a pardon and giving me the opportunity to keep building—as a man, as a father and as an artist,” he stated. “The moment means a lot. It opens the door to a future I’ve worked hard for and I’m fully prepared to step into this.”

The rapper’s public endorsement has drawn a mixed reaction from fans, with many expressing disappointment and concern. Social media platforms are filled with commentary on the unexpected turn. “The CIA got NBA YoungBoy on album called ‘MASA’ saying ‘all hail trump’ .. they have officially won,” one user posted on X. Another commented, “NBA youngboy on his album telling young black boys Trump is good for them .. smh.” However, some fans have defended YoungBoy, with one post reading, “My goat in his own world he dont watch CNN,” seemingly referencing Trump’s controversies.

This situation highlights the complex relationship between hip-hop artists and the political landscape, particularly when personal circumstances – such as a presidential pardon – come into play. The controversy surrounding MASA and “XXX” underscores the power of celebrity endorsements and the potential for division they can create.
