Cohabitation between the multinational Olam Palm Gabon is not looking good. The populations around the oil palm plantations do not hesitate to point the finger at society
(Gabonews): It is difficult to situate the relationships of cohabitation between the communities bordering the oil palm plantations and the leader in yellow gold.
In the Dola department, in the south of Gabon, since 2012, the friendship between the company and the populations has often been “conflicting“. Pollution of rivers, “land grabbing“, complex access to agricultural production areas, on a daily basis there are complaints, denunciations.
At the end of September, Olam invited residents of the villages Ferra, Nanga, Iroungou and others for proposals for employment, the repair of water pumps in villages impacted by the company’s activities as well as electrification. The tone of the villagers had been heavy in the ears of the emissaries of the multinational in the presence of the prefect of Dola, Anicet Léonce Iwangou.
Several nationals from the affected villages left the room after having set prerequisites: refilling with mineral water. “Our waterways are polluted because of this company” says a resident of Ferra, Flavienne M.
Among the facts that anger these brave men and women, the man-elephant conflict since Olam made trenches around its installations. Which would explain the regular presence of pachyderms in the fields of local residents. Victim of destruction of her cassava and banana fields by elephants, Albertine Moussounda from the village of Nanga is demanding compensation; she is not the only one going in this direction.
The collective of communities from the villages impacted by the Dola oil palm plantations contacted the General Management of Olam by letter on October 4, as if to dismiss the local branch whose communication reveals doubts about the faithful transmission of their demands. No one in Olam wants to loosen their tongue.
