Stellantis NV has issued a massive recall of nearly 1 million vehicles in the United States and abroad after a software flaw in radio systems caused rearview cameras to fail, a critical safety feature now mandated by federal law. The automaker, which includes brands like Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, and Ram, said the issue affects 848,511 U.S. vehicles and more than 100,000 others in Canada and other markets, with the fix arriving as an over-the-air software update. No injuries have been reported, but the recall underscores growing concerns about the reliability of shared digital architectures in modern cars.
A Shared Digital Spine, A Shared Bug
The recall impacts a wide range of models, including the 2026-2027 Chrysler Pacifica, Dodge Charger, and a long list of Jeep and Ram vehicles, from the Wrangler to the ProMaster van. The problem stems from a radio software glitch that prevents the rearview camera from displaying on the infotainment screen, a feature now classified as safety equipment under U.S. law.
A federal standard made rearview cameras mandatory. This means a software issue that would have been considered an annoying infotainment bug
in 2015 is now a safety recall, highlighting how regulatory expectations have evolved.
Stellantis said owners will receive recall notices starting in September, with updates delivered remotely. Drivers should lean on their side- and rearview mirrors while reversing,
said spokesperson Frank Matyok, adding that dealers will install the fix for free if needed. The company emphasized that no physical parts are required, a shift toward software-based recalls that reduces costs and inconvenience.
A Pattern of Software-Driven Recalls
This is not the first time Stellantis has faced scrutiny over software failures. In January 2025, the company recalled more than 72,000 Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 pickups and chassis cabs after a software error left the instrument cluster blank, hiding warning lights, gear position, and other information required under federal brake and shifting standards. The root cause—shared electronic architecture—mirrors the current issue, raising questions about the risks of consolidating systems across multiple brands.
The automaker’s decision to unify its software backbone across Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, and other brands was initially framed as a cost-saving measure. By using a single infotainment system and supplier relationships, Stellantis aimed to cut engineering expenses. However, the same architecture that enables efficiency also creates vulnerabilities: a single line of faulty code can ripple across multiple models and brands.
A software defect that slipped through validation on vehicles built around shared electronic architecture is the common thread.
What This Means for Owners and the Industry
For drivers, the recall is largely low-stakes: no physical repairs are needed, and the fix is automatic. However, the incident highlights the growing role of software in vehicle safety. Stellantis’ approach—prioritizing over-the-air fixes—sets a precedent for the industry. The company saved significant warranty costs in 2025 by proactively addressing issues, a strategy that could become standard as vehicles grow more connected. Yet, the recall also signals the challenges of managing complex digital ecosystems, where a single bug can have far-reaching consequences.
As the automaker moves forward, the focus will remain on balancing innovation with reliability. For now, drivers are advised to monitor their vehicles for update prompts and rely on mirrors until the fix is applied.
