A new peer-reviewed study published by the American Heart Association has revealed that early signs of arterial injury and cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome are already present in a vast majority of people in their early 20s. Investigators evaluated participants from a diverse cohort using two distinct metrics, highlighting a critical window for intervention long before clinical cardiovascular events typically manifest.
FF-CHAYA Study Findings and CKM Stages Among Young Adults
Researchers analyzed health data drawn from 1,283 participants enrolled in the Future of Families–Cardiovascular Health Among Young Adults, known as the FF-CHAYA study, where individuals averaged 23 years of age. The evaluation showed that nearly 80% of participants met criteria for CKM syndrome stage 1, 2, or 3. This means they already carried excess adiposity, metabolic risk factors, or evidence of subclinical cardiovascular disease. Only about 21% presented with no identifiable CKM risk factors, placing them in stage 0, while none of the participants reached stage 4.
In addition to categorizing participants by CKM stage, researchers checked for signs of arterial injury using ultrasound imaging focused on the carotid arteries in the neck. Independent cross-sectional research evaluating populations has identified links between prolonged exposure to air pollutants—particularly particulate matter such as PM10—and an increased prevalence of early CKM syndrome, with systemic inflammation acting as a crucial pathophysiological mediator that accelerates disease progression.

When combined with the FF-CHAYA findings, these data point to a continuum of risk where upstream environmental and behavioral drivers interact with metabolic health across the lifespan.
