Neglected Tropical Diseases: what are their characteristics?

Buruli ulcer, bilharzia, lymphatic filariasis, sleeping sickness or leprosy… These diseases are among the 21 Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) listed by the WHO, and which affect more than a billion people. These diseases are prevalent in areas where access to quality health services, drinking water and sanitation is difficult.

What are the characteristics of neglected tropical diseases? In what environment do populations affected by these diseases live? Which NTDs have a good chance of being eradicated by 2030?
