Nelson Asofa-Solomona Trades the NRL Field for the Boxing Ring

A former Melbourne Storm powerhouse, Nelson Asofa-Solomona, is embarking on a new career path after signing a multi-year contract with Australian boxing promoters No Limit, signaling a dramatic shift from rugby league to the heavyweight division. The move comes after a period of diminished playing time and a mutual parting of ways with the Storm, culminating in his release on October 9th.

From Premiership Glory to a Crossroads

Asofa-Solomona was a key figure in Melbourne’s premiership-winning sides in 2017 and 2020, amassing 203 games over a decade with the club. However, his role diminished in 2025, appearing in only 12 matches and missing the last two grand finals due to suspension. “I could see it coming,” Asofa-Solomona told foxsports.com.au. “It was a mutual agreement and I just think it was time… it was time. It was sad but onto a different chapter.”

The prop forward’s departure came with a significant financial sacrifice, walking away from a contract reportedly worth over $800,000 per season. Notably, a direct conversation with Storm coach Craig Bellamy regarding his future never materialized. “We honestly didn’t have a conversation,” Asofa-Solomona stated. “I’m not too sure if he even knew. He is a coach, he is focusing on the whole team.”

Exploring Options: R360 and the Allure of Boxing

Following his release, speculation swirled around Asofa-Solomona’s next move. The emerging R360 rugby competition was considered, but ultimately, the allure of boxing proved stronger. “There was a few clubs there, but I told them all the same thing,” he explained. “I’m not ready to come back, I just want to bide my time and find what I enjoy again.” He acknowledged R360 as a “great concept” but ultimately decided to pursue a different path.

The decision reflects a desire for a break and a rediscovery of passion. “I wanted to experience a Europe summer, but here we are. I just seem to find myself in trouble,” he quipped.

A New Challenge: Entering the Heavyweight Arena

With the NRL now behind him, Asofa-Solomona is embracing the challenge of professional boxing. He acknowledges the risk involved, stating, “I’ve thrown myself a bit into the unknown, taken a risk. Sometimes I think ‘what the hell am I doing?’ But I think you have to be in that mindset sometimes where you feel a little (nervous). As I said, what’s life without risk?”

The 201cm powerhouse isn’t a stranger to the ring, having previously secured a third-round TKO victory over fellow NRL enforcer Jarrod Wallace. Despite believing that fight would be his only foray into boxing, he found himself drawn back to the sport. “I didn’t think I was going to fight again but it’s something that I enjoy. I woke up in the morning and boxing was the second or third thing on my mind,” he said. “That’s what I base it off, I base it off what gets me out of bed.”

Asofa-Solomona is drawing inspiration from other NRL stars who have successfully transitioned to boxing, such as Paul Gallen and Anthony Mundine. “I want to pave my own way,” he said. “I really respect what…Paul Gallen, Sonny Bill Williams, Anthony Mundine have done in their careers and it’s cool because it’s given me a bit of a blueprint and inspiration.”

His first bout under the No Limit banner is scheduled for January 16 on the Nikita Tszyu vs Michael Zerafa card, though an opponent has yet to be announced. He is prepared to make waves in the Australian heavyweight boxing scene, driven by a renewed sense of purpose and a willingness to embrace the unknown.
