A powerful addition to the squad, Papua New Guinea international Nene Macdonald has signed a two-year contract with St Helens, bolstering their ambitions for continued success in the Super League. The move reunites the 31-year-old centre with former Salford Red Devils coach Paul Rowley, signaling a strategic intent to revitalize the team’s performance.
A Proven Performer Joins the Ranks
Macdonald arrives at St Helens following a successful stint with Salford, where he quickly became an influential figure after joining from Leeds Rhinos in 2024. His impact was immediately felt, contributing to the Red Devils’ impressive fourth-place finish and securing a coveted spot in the Super League play-offs that season. Prior to his time in Super League, Macdonald established himself as a formidable player in the National Rugby League (NRL), accumulating nearly 100 appearances across several prominent clubs.
These included stints with the Sydney Roosters, Gold Coast Titans, St George Illawarra Dragons, North Queensland Cowboys, and Cronulla Sharks. He further demonstrated his ability to elevate teams, playing a key role in Leigh’s promotion to Super League, where he scored an impressive 27 tries in 27 appearances. A subsequent year with Leeds Rhinos preceded his move to Salford.
Macdonald’s departure from Salford last season came amidst growing financial issues within the club, leading to a period of unpaid leave. However, the opportunity to work once again with Paul Rowley proved a significant draw. “When I first came over to England, Saints were winning everything and known for being such a huge club, so to be able to come and join a big club with such history is really exciting,” Macdonald stated.
He expressed enthusiasm for a “fresh start” with the new coaching staff and players, adding, “I’m looking forward to helping get Saints back on top.” Macdonald also highlighted the positive impact of Rowley’s coaching style, noting, “He is a great coach and manages me really well to get the best out of me. I’ll give my best for Saints and for him.”
St Helens’ Strategic Investment
The acquisition of Macdonald is viewed as a significant coup for St Helens, particularly at a late stage in the recruitment cycle. “To be able to bring a player of Nene’s calibre to the club at such a late stage is a real boost to our squad and testament to the ambition and support of [CEO] Mike Rush and the board,” Rowley added. This signing underscores St Helens’ commitment to maintaining a competitive edge and pursuing further success in the Super League.
