The iconic funicular railway connecting Újezd, Nebozízk, and Petřín will suspend operations for four days, shutting down from Tuesday, November 10, through Friday, November 13, according to statements released by Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) spokesperson Daniel Šabík via České noviny. The temporary closure is required to accommodate filming for an upcoming international television series produced by the streaming platform Netflix.
Netflix Production to Temporarily Close Prague’s Famous Funicular
The upcoming screen adaptation is based on the bestselling novel The Secret of All Secrets (Tajemství všech tajemství) by American author Dan Brown, a story heavily set within the Czech capital. Alongside the funicular itself, the production will feature several other prominent Prague transit and landmark locations on screen, including the Petřín Lookout Tower, local trams, and the city’s metro system, according to DPP transport director Jan Barchánek, who noted that the project offers exceptional visibility for the city and its public transportation network.
High Ridership and Ongoing Production Across the Capital
The Petřín funicular recently resumed passenger service on September 22 following a comprehensive two-year reconstruction project. The newly deployed cars, built according to a design by Anna Marešová, are currently operating under a trial phase along the restored tracks. Since reopening, the funicular has experienced exceptionally high demand from commuters and visitors, leading to prolonged queues during peak periods.

By the end of October, the transit authority recorded 413,615 passengers on the Petřín line, averaging 10,340 daily riders. To accommodate the heavy passenger volume, the operator dispatched an additional 754 supplementary runs beyond the standard timetable. Out of the first 40 days of the trial operation, only seven days required no extra runs.
As a result of the ongoing congestion, the transit company decided to maintain the summer timetable with shorter service intervals throughout the upcoming autumn and winter seasons rather than shifting to a reduced winter schedule. Regular maintenance and technical inspections for the funicular have been postponed until March 2027, with spring overhauls scheduled from March 8 through March 25. Ticket data indicates that roughly 85 percent of riders utilize prepaid passes or 24- and 72-hour short-term transit tickets, while standard single-fare tickets cost 100 crowns, or 90 crowns when purchased via the PID application (České noviny).
Netflix Crews Film Across Prague Landmarks
Netflix’s international production crew has been actively filming across Prague since early September. Previous shooting locations include Letná, the Municipal House (Obecní dům), Čech Bridge (Čechův most), the Rudolfinum, Charles Bridge (Karlův most), and sets constructed at the Barrandov Studios. Additionally, Mariánské náměstí and the main entrance of the Municipal Library building are closed to the public for filming activities on November 4 and 5.
Author Dan Brown has visited Prague multiple times to oversee production and participate personally in the adaptation process. The writer serves as both a co-writer of the script and an executive producer alongside Carlton Cuse, known for his work on the television series Lost. The central role of Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is portrayed by Morgan Spector, who stars alongside Rebecca Hall as Katherine Solomon. The streaming platform has not yet announced an official release date for the series.
