Nevada Woman Banned from Mohegan Arena After Trespassing, Assaulting Police

A Nevada woman has been sentenced to probation and barred from Mohegan Arena at Casey Plaza after a series of escalating confrontations with law enforcement following an unauthorized entry into a restricted area. The incident highlights the challenges faced by security personnel and the potential for violence during encounters with individuals exhibiting disruptive behavior.

Luzerne County Judge David W. Lupas sentenced Mariah Sky Alvarez, of Spark, Nevada, to one year of probation on Tuesday after she pleaded guilty to charges of resisting arrest, institutional vandalism, defiant trespass, and disorderly conduct. A more serious charge of aggravated assault was withdrawn by prosecutors as part of a plea agreement.

Initial Trespass and Confrontation at Mohegan Arena

According to the criminal complaint, Wilkes-Barre Township police responded to the arena on Highland Park Boulevard on Dec. 13 after security personnel discovered Alvarez trespassing in a restricted area. Alvarez reportedly told security she intended to excavate the area near discarded blankets and beer cans in search of fossils.

The situation quickly deteriorated when Alvarez refused repeated requests from officers to leave the premises. “After Alvarez refused repeated officer commands to leave the arena, she initiated a struggle that injured a police sergeant,” the complaint states.

Escalating Assaults on Law Enforcement

The struggle continued even after Alvarez was placed in handcuffs. She allegedly attempted to grab and kick a detective in the groin area, further escalating the situation. The confrontations did not end with the arrest at the arena.

Upon arrival at police headquarters, Alvarez engaged in further disruptive and offensive behavior. While being subjected to a routine pat-down search by a female officer, Alvarez “intentionally urinated on the cell floor.” This act of institutional vandalism added another layer to the charges against her.

Court Order and Legal Representation

As part of her sentence, Judge Lupas issued a court order prohibiting Alvarez from returning to the Mohegan Arena. Attorney John Donovan represented Alvarez throughout the legal proceedings.

The case underscores the importance of respecting private property and the potential consequences of resisting law enforcement. The incident serves as a reminder of the safety protocols in place at venues like Mohegan Arena and the dedication of law enforcement officers to maintaining public order.
