New blood test can detect more than 50 types of cancer

A new blood test developed by Grail is capable of discovering more than 50 types of tumors through a blood sample. The company’s initiative should facilitate early diagnosis, with better chances of recovering from cancer.

The test looks for signs of tumor cells in the sample. The DNA of the cells is traceable in the blood, even when they die after leaving the human organism.

Galleri is a multiple cancer early detection test (MCED) that looks for shared signal in more than 50 types of cancer via simple blood draw. Many of these cancers are not commonly screened for today and may otherwise go unnoticed before symptoms appear.

Grail, announced on the exam’s official website

Check out some of the types of cancer that the exam is able to detect:

  • Anal cancer;
  • Uterine cancer;
  • Breast cancer;
  • Lung cancer;
  • Cervical cancer;
  • Bowel cancer;
  • Prostate cancer;
  • First melanoma;
  • Soft Tissue Sarcoma of the Head.

The test has now been available for 18 months in the United States. The next step will be the efficacy test developed by the NHS (National Health Service), and will take place in England. Around 140,000 people aged between 50 and 77 have volunteered to take part in the trial after receiving an invitation letter, the NHS said.

“We will get the first data from this trial next year, and if those data look good, they will [os agentes do NHS] will extend the project to one million people over the next few years,” said Harpal Kumar, president of Grail’s European division.
