The main separatist groups facing government forces in northern Mali announced the formation of a new coalition and named a pro-independence figure, according to a statement issued on Thursday.

Representatives of the Permanent Strategic Framework (CSP), an alliance of mainly Tuareg separatist armed groups, announced at the end of a meeting held at the end of April that a “new structure would be created with the aim of creating a “new structure. a single political entity that carries the demands of the people of Azawad”, the name of the territory claimed by the separatists in northern Mali.

Armed separatist groups lost control of several parts of the North at the end of 2023 after attacks by the Malian army that culminated in the capture of Kidal, a basis for independence demands and a major question of sovereignty for the central state.

“One of the main objectives and major objectives of the new structure is to obtain a political and legal status in every way for the territory of Azawad,” states the text, whose authors call “the active forces of Azawad (…), to join hands. and mobilized to protect their lives on their territory.”

The CSP, or Permanent Strategic Framework for Peace, Security and Development (CSP-PSD) since its inception in 2021 brought together the Coordination of Azawad Movements (CMA), whose groups are now in open conflict with Bamako, and movements loyal to the regime announced their withdrawal from the CSP in September.

According to the press release published on Thursday, the new alliance, called the Permanent Strategic Framework for the Protection of the People of Azawad (CSP-DPA), is chaired by Bilal Ag Acherif, a figure of the separatists and the historical adversary of the central government, who is subject to financial sanctions issued by the Malian authorities in March.

Mali, a poor and landlocked country in the heart of the Sahel, has been in a multifaceted crisis since independence and Jihadist insurgencies in the north began in 2012. The military seized power in a corruption scandal in 2020 and broke its military partnership with France, a former colonial power. , to turn to Russia.
