Grammy weekend in Los Angeles is always a spectacle, a four-day flurry of parties and celebrations. But on Saturday night, the Kia Forum became the epicenter for a different kind of magic: the third stop of the 30-city New Edition Way Tour. For three solid hours, Ronnie DeVoe, Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, Mike Bivins, Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill, alongside Boyz II Men’s Wanya Morris, Nathan Morris and Shawn Stockman, and the incomparable Toni Braxton, kept the crowd thoroughly engaged. What set this concert apart was the equal billing given to each act—a refreshing change of pace.

The lights dimmed at 8:21 pm, and anticipation hung thick in the air. New Edition launched the show, emerging in crisp white outfits. Then came Braxton, radiating her signature sultry energy, followed by Boyz II Men, their voices instantly filling the arena. Every microphone worked, and the energy was palpable.

The setlist, boasting over 40 songs, was a masterclass in R&B history. New Edition, BBD, Ralph Tresvant, Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, Boyz II Men and Toni Braxton seamlessly alternated stage time, delivering hit after hit across decades. They frequently supported each other with harmonies and choreography, creating a dynamic and collaborative performance.

From classics like “N.E. Heart Break,” “You’re Makin’ Me High,” “Don’t Be Cruel” and “Motownphilly,” to Boyz II Men’s “Sensitivity,” “Can You Stand the Rain,” “Roni,” and “I’ll Make Love to You,” the night was a non-stop singalong. Braxton captivated the audience with “Hit the Freeway,” and New Edition took fans back to 1983 with “Candy Girl.” A particularly poignant moment occurred when Braxton dedicated her rendition of “Breathe Again” to her late sister Tracy and to Whitney Houston. Boyz II Men followed with “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday,” accompanied by a moving tribute on screen to those recently lost, including Roberta Flack, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Rob Reiner, Angie Stone, and Richard Smallwood.

What makes a concert truly unforgettable? For many at the Kia Forum, it was the unexpected moments of connection and tribute woven throughout the night.

The energy surged again with the surprise appearance of Kayla Nicole, who gained viral fame last Halloween for her rendition of “He Wasn’t Man Enough.” She joined Braxton and her dancers for a show-stopping performance of the 2000 hit, instantly sparking another wave of social media buzz.

Adding to the excitement, B2K unexpectedly took the stage to perform their 2002 hit, “Bump, Bump, Bump!” The crowd erupted, proving the enduring appeal of early 2000s R&B. The atmosphere reached fever pitch even before BBD unleashed “Poison,” a song the entire audience had been eagerly awaiting.

At 11:24 pm, as white and gold confetti rained down, the lights came up. The crowd lingered, savoring the final moments, hoping for an encore. While one didn’t materialize, the night felt complete. A sweet takeaway was witnessing the genuine joy shared by Braxton and the New Edition members, who clearly relished the experience as much as their fans. Their legacies, it’s safe to say, are firmly cemented.

The New Edition Way Tour continues on Wednesday, February 4, at Chicago’s United Center, traveling across the Midwest, East Coast, and Gulf Coast, culminating on April 4 at the Toyota Center in Houston.

This tour is a must-see for any fan of classic R&B. Don’t miss it.
