On November 14, 786 confirmed cases of monkeypox had been reported in our country. That is one more infection compared to the previous balance. The additional infection was recorded in a man in Brussels, according to the latest figures from health institute Sciensano on Friday.

This concerns 410 cases in Flanders (52 percent), 283 cases in Brussels (36 percent) and 93 cases in Wallonia (12 percent). In the cases for which the gender is known, there are 775 men, five women, and three persons who identify themselves differently. The age for the great majority is between 15 and 71 years old. Two cases have been reported in under 16 year olds: one child under three years old and one child over 12 years old.

Thirty-nine people were hospitalized, 28 for treatment (four of whom had an underlying immune disorder), three because home isolation was not possible, and eight for unknown reasons. One death has been reported to date in a person with underlying health conditions.

A total of 4,234 first doses and 1,061 second doses of the monkeypox vaccines were administered. Anyone who received his first vaccine abroad can have the second dose administered in our country from 21 November.

Sciensano reiterates that, based on current data, the virus appears to be mainly transmitted through sexual contact. Where initially infection was mainly reported through sexual contact at major events, this is now the case for sexual contact in the private sphere. Infections mainly occur in men who have sexual contacts with men.
