The Ukrainian city next to the destroyed dam in Ukraine is preferably named in Spanish New Kakhovka.
In the news you could find examples such as “The mayor of Nova Kajovka said that the water level in the city was rising rapidly” or “More than 17 000 evacuated after the explosion in Nova Kakhovka”.
Kajovka is the recommended transcription from the name of a city located on the banks of the reservoir, in the Kherson region. In the middle of the 20th century it was founded to the southwest of it another city, called New Kakhovkawhich is where the dam is located with the hydroelectric power station. Although the first element in Ukrainian is often retained, it is advisable to translate it, as is done with other place names containing the vernacular term meaning ‘new’even if other elements are preserved, such as NY, new delhi o Nova Zembla.
If, however, you choose to fully maintain the forma originalthe proper transcription is New Kajovka, with tilde in the first element for being a high voice.
Finally, it is remembered that the dam, the hydroelectric power station and the reservoir are named after Kajovkado not give New Kakhovka.
Therefore, in the above examples it would have been more appropriate to write “The mayor of New Kakhovka said that the water level in the city was rising rapidly” and “More than 17 000 evacuated after the explosion in New Kakhovka”.
