TRAI Cracks Down on Fake Calls with Stricter Regulations
Despite government efforts, the nuisance of fake calls persists. To tackle this issue, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has implemented new measures and assigned responsibility to telecom companies.
TRAI has designated telecom service providers accountable for harassment caused by fake calls. If a customer reports such incidents, the respective telecom company will be held responsible and the culprit will be blacklisted for two years.
Furthermore, TRAI is cracking down on telemarketing and promotional message companies, which have devised fraudulent methods to evade regulations. Strict action will be taken against violators.
The surge in the use of SIP or PRI connections for automated calls, voice calls, and pre-recorded messages has also been observed. TRAI has devised an action plan to address this specific issue.
TRAI Leadership Takes Action
TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti convened a meeting with representatives from major telecom service providers to discuss and finalize measures to combat fake calls. Representatives from Reliance Jio, Airtel, BSNL, Vodafone Idea Limited, Tata Teleservices Limited, Quadrant Televentures Limited, and V-Con Mobile and Infra Private Limited attended the meeting.
Unanimous Agreement
The proposed measures to tackle rule violations received unanimous approval from all telecom companies present in the meeting. Immediate action will be taken against violators.
