To address this, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead (CHW) is preparing to open a state-of-the-art facility designed to reduce patient trauma through a combination of architectural empathy and high-precision technology. The centerpiece of this effort is the innovative new perioperative suite, a purpose-built surgical hub that occupies an entire floor of the hospital’s new 14-storey building.
The facility represents a significant shift in pediatric surgical care, moving away from fragmented service delivery toward an integrated model. By clustering essential surgical services, the hospital aims to minimize the physical distance patients must travel while under anesthesia, thereby reducing the risks associated with patient transport and improving the overall safety profile of the perioperative journey.
According to Sherief Marzouk, the Surgery and Anaesthesia Clinical Stream Director, the expansion is a strategic response to the growing healthcare needs of Western Sydney. The new layout nearly doubles the hospital’s existing capacity, ensuring that both elective and emergency surgical demands can be met with greater efficiency.
Digital Integration and Enhanced Surgical Visibility
One of the most critical upgrades within the suite is the transition to fully digital operating theatres. In traditional surgical settings, critical data—such as images from a laparoscope or vitals from a neuro monitor—are often confined to a single screen, visible only to the clinician standing directly in front of it. The new system allows all equipment producing sound or imagery to “talk” to any screen in the room.

Kathleen Laughlin, a CHW Perioperative Nurse, explains that this connectivity creates a shared mental map for the entire surgical team. Whether We see an image from a microscope, a room camera, or an anesthetic monitor, the data is now accessible across multiple displays.
“We all perform to keep patients safe and deliver them the best outcome—this will give us better visibility,” Laughlin said.
This digital ecosystem is not merely about convenience; it is a safety mechanism. By reducing the time patients spend in transit between hospital spaces, the facility ensures that children remain connected to life-sustaining equipment and monitoring services for the shortest possible duration while anesthetized.
Precision Care in the Cardiac Catheter Laboratory
The integration extends to specialized diagnostics, with the new Cardiac Catheter Laboratory (Cath Lab) now situated directly within the theatre complex. This proximity is vital for “hybrid” procedures, where surgical and interventional teams must collaborate in real-time. Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Paul Adams notes that this physical closeness improves the coordination of teams working “hand in hand” during complex cardiac interventions.

Alongside the Cath Lab, the suite introduces an advanced interventional radiology (IR) machine. These image-guided systems allow clinicians to perform procedures through minimally invasive entry points, typically in the leg or groin. For the patient, this translates to a drastically reduced recovery timeline.
“These less invasive procedures allow a child to go home earlier, often the same day, sometimes the next day, without needing ICU care or recovery from a surgical wound. It makes the process much quicker,” Dr. Adams said.

Addressing Pediatric Anxiety Through Design
Beyond the high-tech machinery, the facility employs psychological design to mitigate the stress of the hospital experience. The expanded anaesthetic and recovery areas are paired with “envirographics”—calming wall murals featuring fish and animals native to the Parramatta region.
Ria Bertsos, an Anaesthetics and Recovery Nurse, describes these visuals as a vital tool for patient engagement. By encouraging children to spot animals on the walls, staff can distract them from the clinical surroundings and the anxiety of the upcoming procedure.

Scalability and Future Demand
The development of the innovative new perioperative suite is designed for longevity. To prevent the facility from becoming obsolete as the population of Western Sydney grows, the hospital has included “cold shell” operating theatres. These are completed structural spaces that can be quickly converted into fully functional operating rooms as demand increases.
This foresight allows the Children’s Hospital at Westmead redevelopment to scale without requiring further major construction. As Sherief Marzouk stated, “This building is not just built for today. It’s built for the future.”
