New planet found near Proxima Centauri

by time news

The journal Astronomy & Astrophysics presents the results of a study of the system of the star closest to the Sun – Proxima Centauri. Scientists have found a new candidate planet there.

The found planet is the lightest of the discovered exoplanets. Its mass is only a quarter of the Earth’s. To observe and prove the existence of a new planet, experts used a high-precision spectrograph located on the Very Large Telescope in Chile.

Using the same spectrograph, scientists previously found the exoplanet Proxima b. Three exoplanets have now been discovered in the Proxima Centauri system.
