New vehicles have an average price rising above inflation

by time news

According to information from the consultancy JATO Dynamics, the average price of a brand new car rose 7.7% in one year and costs more than R$ 141,400, almost double the price of a new entry-level car, the Renault Kwid (R$ 68. 1 thousand).

The data indicate that the inflation of 0 km was 2.1 percentage points above the IPCA – the accumulated index was 5.6%. In five years, the average value of a new vehicle rose an incredible 90%, going from R$74,300 to R$141,400.

The increase was higher during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, which forced shutdowns due to the lockdown and the consequent lack of parts, especially semiconductors. Between February 2021 and February 2022, the increase was 37.5%.

Thus, most vehicles are reaching the triple digits. While more than ten years ago, a zero entry vehicle cost around R$ 30,000, today it costs twice as much (it is worth mentioning that the introduction of new factory items – ABS, airbag, media, air conditioning, etc. – also caused an increase in recent years) and, for the worker to be able to acquire one, he needs 50 minimum wages, or more than four years of work spent.

We don’t even have to go that far to identify the change. Four years ago, the cheapest model was the Chery QQ (R$ 26,600). To acquire it, the worker needed 28 minimum wages.

The president of Anfavea (National Association of Automotive Vehicle Manufacturers), Márcio de Lima Leite, indicates that the problem lies in the loss of Brazilian purchasing power.

In this vein, the entity simulated the correction of the values of vehicles offered between 1992 and 1994, when Itamar Franco was president. Incredible as it may seem, the VW Fusca Itamar, the cheapest at the time, would cost BRL 80,000 today – even more expensive than the current entry-level car.
