New Year’s celebrations banned in Sharjah and Pakistan amid Gaza war

Dubai: In a show of solidarity with the ongoing conflict in Palestine, Sharjah and Pakistan have made the decision to avoid New Year celebrations. The move comes in response to the recent atrocities committed by Israel in Gaza and the continued occupation of Palestine.

Christmas celebrations were also avoided in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, southern Lebanon, and Syria as a means of protesting Israeli occupation. This was followed by a declaration of solidarity with Gaza.

The third-largest Arab city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sharjah, has canceled all New Year celebrations, including fireworks. The Sharjah Police has announced that legal action will be taken against those participating in the festivities. However, there have been no official restrictions announced in other parts of the UAE.

In contrast, Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, is set to host the Sheikh Zayed Festival, which will include an hour-long fireworks display as part of the New Year celebration. The Global Village in Dubai has confirmed that several events, including fireworks at the iconic Burj Khalifa, will also take place.

Meanwhile, in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, traditional street New Year parties and concerts will be hosted, and fireworks and other events are planned in Riyadh, the Saudi capital.

In Qatar, laser shows and celebrations will be held in Lusail City. Qatar had earlier avoided celebrations on its national day in solidarity with Gaza.

Furthermore, Pakistan has banned all kinds of New Year celebrations. Caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar has urged the nation to stay away from the festivities in solidarity with the Palestinian people. He expressed sorrow over the recent massacre of innocent children in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as the ongoing genocide of Palestinians, stating that the Muslim world and Pakistan share the pain of the Palestinian people.

The decision to forgo New Year celebrations in both Sharjah and Pakistan comes as a strong statement of support for the people of Palestine amid the ongoing conflict.
