The National Football League has fundamentally reshaped sports analysis over the past decade wiht next Gen Stats (NGS), a sophisticated system powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS) that’s influencing everything from player safety to game strategy. This technology, processing millions of data points per game through 75 machine learning models, represents a new era in professional sports, where every movement on the field is meticulously measured and analyzed.
For years, football relied on rudimentary statistics.”For more than 100 years, this sport was a game of basic statistics: yards, touchdowns, tackles,” explained a senior NFL data and analytics official. “Looking at traditional statistics, you didn’t even know who the 22 players were who were on the field for a given play.”
The Launch of a New Era: 2015 and Beyond
The NFL revolutionized it’s approach to analytics in 2015 with the launch of NGS. The league began equipping each player with RFID chips embedded in their shoulder pads and placing a chip inside the football itself. More than 20 ultra-wideband receivers were installed in every stadium to capture precise location data, transmitting the coordinates of all 22 players (10 times per second) and the ball (25 times per second) to within centimeters. Initially, teams had access only to their own data. however, in 2018, access was expanded league-wide, and the agreement with AWS was formalized, establishing NGS as a critical piece of NFL infrastructure.
Currently, NGS generates between 500 and 1,000 statistics per play.This massive influx of data relies on AWS infrastructure to ingest, process, and deliver results to teams and broadcasts in a matter of seconds.
Beyond the Box Score: Player Safety and Rule Changes
The impact of NGS extends far beyond traditional performance analysis. The technology is actively improving player safety by providing concrete data on speed, space, and motion, allowing the NFL to understand the dynamics of risky plays. The 2024 dynamic kickoff is a prime example.
According to league data, the NGS system quantified dangerous collisions during kickoffs, prompting the Competition Committee to redesign the formation. The result? A 75% return rate (up from 32%), a 35% reduction in lower extremity injuries, 1,157 additional plays, and fewer concussions compared to the previous kickoff format.
The Future of Football: Pose Tracking and Virtual reality
The NFL isn’t stopping with current NGS capabilities. The next frontier is optical tracking, utilizing 4K cameras to capture the three-dimensional position of key joints, creating digital skeletal models for each player. While the current system tracks player position 10 times per second, this advanced technology records 29 points on the body from 16 different angles, 60 times per second, offering a comprehensive, real-time view of athlete movement.
“On a pass play, we can see the ball pass a player, but we don’t know if it rolled between his legs or flew 20 yards over his head,” one analyst noted.
